Access to Blackhope Glen is from the A 708 road to Selkirk about 5 miles north of Moffat.   Parking is available on hard ground just beyond Cappelgill Farm. Park on left of the road and opposite the start of wide dirt track leading into Blackhope Glen.
Start the walk by following this wide track.

For those less fit, or if your time is short, there is the option of a very enjoyable walk into and out of the glen.
The broad dirt road provides easy access to the end of the glen with striking views to right and left of Swatte Fell, Falcon Craigs and Saddle Yoke .
If you do nothing else but walk into the glen and back out again you will enjoy views of the crags on either side as they breaking the smooth velvet of the grassy slopes.   There are many ways to enjoy the peace and beauty of the Moffat Hills and this is just one of them.
At the head of the glen there are two further options, a direct ascent to Hartfell summit or a scramble up Whirlygill.
Walk up this dirt road until a old drystane sheep fold is reached pass above it to find a style over the new fence.

Whether you decide to take an energetic or a casual walk, you will probably have to share it with some of the locals.
Sheep and you might occasionally see a feral goat, but more interesting are the gentle belted Galloways.
