| Drystane
walls and sheep pens are to be found all over the hills of
Dumfries and Galloway. These structures date back some
two centuries or more to a time of agricultural change
referred to as the 'enclosures'. |
To
maximize their incomes, the lairds enclosed large areas
of open hills and leased them as separate farms.
This structure is quite unusual in that the it comprises
linked circles or ' buchts', single units are more usual. |
