On the heathery ridge leading to the large cairn which is just visible in the hazy outline of the summit.
At the Cairn on Screel. On a clear day the views are stunning. Misty haze in the valley
 and sunshine on the hill.
In good visibilty the views over Balcary Bay and Heston Island and down the to the Urr Estuary are exceptional. The view inland, especially later in the day, is likely to have some heavier cloud cover. Duncan is just enjoying the peace on the hill.  Noise from the farms below can still intrude up here.  It takes the remoteness of the Merrick in winter before you can experience real silence and the natural sounds of the wind or the snow melt-water cascading off the hill.  On a really clear day the views over the Urr Estuary, East up the Solway and across to the English coast of Cumbria,  West to the Mull of Galloway and out to the Isle of Man are just spectacular.
Photographs can't quite capture what can be seen with the naked eye!   Anyone just starting out hillwalking should try Screel.
Do it once and you will catch the bug for sure.  You don't even need your own transport, Screel is on a public bus route.
